Abstract

The major colloids present in soils are the aluminosilicate clay minerals. These dominate the chemical and physical properties of soils because of their very extensive surfaces. The reactions of the clays with water cause shrinking and swelling and this provides the major mechanism responsible for aggregations of particles in soil. The arrangement of clay particles in aggregates is discussed by Tessier in Chapter 14 of this book. This chapter describes the associations of clay minerals with oxides, organic materials, and compounds of calcium in aggregates of various sizes. Such associations have implications for the structure and stability of soils, and for the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and other organogenic elements.
