Abstract
The infant has a relatively high requirement for zinc during the early months of life when growth is normally rapid. By 4–5 months of age, the zinc intake of infants fed human milk may be only slightly greater than the estimated requirement for net absorption (Krebs and Hambidge, 1986). Although in studies with adults the fractional absorption of zinc in human milk has been found to compare favorably to that in cow’s milk and infant formulas (Sandstrom et al., 1983), no reports are currently available that describe zinc absorption and homeostasis in the breastfed human infant.
