Diffusion and Collision in Cytochrome c-Mediated Electron Transport

  • Chapter
Integration of Mitochondrial Function

Abstract

The Random Collision Model of mitochondrial electron transport (Fig. 1) and the role of diffusion and collision of the redox components of the mitochondrial inner membranes have been recently critically reviewed (Hackenbrock et al., 1986). Assessment of the available, pertinent data reveal that all inner membrane redox components are free diffusants and collide at rates sufficient to limit the maximal (uncoupled) rate of electron transport.
