Analysis of Mechanisms of Free Energy Coupling and Uncoupling by Inhibitor Titrations

  • Chapter
Integration of Mitochondrial Function

Abstract

A still open question in bioenergetics is whether the proton pathway between the primary redox or light driven proton pumps and the secondary ATPsynthase proton pumps is delocalized within the two bulk aqueous phases (Mitchell, 1966) or is (at least in part) localized within the membrane or at its surface (Westerhoff et al., 1984; Ferguson, 1985). In this study we use inhibitor titrations of the primary and secondary proton pumps to establish the extent of delocalization of energy coupling in submitochondrial particles.
