Abstract
Old age has traditionally been considered a time for reducing activity and accepting a decline in health and vigor that eventually leads to death. Images of old people in literature and art show them involved in a sedentary existence that was the reward for a lifetime of hard work; indeed, places that house and care for the aged have been called “rest homes.” The large and increasing number of people aged over 65 (more than 22% of the U.S. population by the year 2050) and their better health have pushed back the limits of old age. One hundred years ago, at the age of 58 a man could be considered used up. Five hundred years ago, Christopher Columbus at 51 was dangerously old for embarking on his fourth voyage to America, and Emperor Charles V of Spain at age 55 was ready to abdicate and retire to a monastery, to prepare for death by prayer and meditation (Braudel, 1979). Today, only 3 to 4% of those aged 55 to 64 are too disabled to walk half a mile or climb stairs, although by age 75 to 84 more than 15% have difficulties in walking and more than half cannot lift or move large objects, as shown in Fig. 1 (Jette and Branch, 1981).
