Aging and the Digestive System

  • Chapter
Nutrition, Aging, and the Elderly

Part of the book series: Human Nutrition ((HUNU,volume 6))

Abstract

The decline in organ function that accompanies normal aging, especially at the extremities of age, includes digestive functions selectively. In this chapter we address the functions of the various organs of the human digestive tract and those studies in man that examine the effects of aging. Insofar as possible, we examine the changes associated with normal aging as distinguished from those changes that result from diseases of the digestive tract. This chapter updates a consideration of this topic, which has been subject of previous reviews in the recent past (Bowman and Rosenberg, 1983; Thompson and Keelan, 1986; Russell, 1987).
