Nutrition and Aging in Animal Models

Nutrition, Aging, and the Elderly

Part of the book series: Human Nutrition ((HUNU,volume 6))

Abstract

Nutrition is frequently claimed to be an important factor influencing the aging processes of humans and other animals (Porta, 1980). In part, this belief is based on nothing more than faith in the “fountain of youth” and in nutrition as a path to it. However, in fact, there are some data in the literature that indicate that nutrition holds promise as a basis for interventions that modulate the adverse effects of aging, thereby enhancing the quality of life at advanced age (Masoro, 1985). By the same token, there are also data that suggest that certain nutritional regimens or dietary components promote the aging process or at least promote age-associated disease or deterioration (Guigoz and Munro, 1985).
