Abstract

Among the different effects living cells exhibit under the influence of external electric fields, rotation of cells is one of the most predominant ones. Teixeira-Pinto et al. (1960) were supposedly the first to report about the spinning of parts of amoebae in a high-frequency field; Füredi and Ohad (1964) observed rotation of erythrocytes and Pohl and Crane (1971) of yeasts. It became clear in the following years that rotation in external fields is a general phenomenon of cells, live as well as dead ones, and that the way of spinning could provide information on the biological and physiological state of the cell under investigation. As spinning often started at a very sharp frequency of the applied field and ceased in the same manner, Pohl and Crane (1971) coined the descriptive name “cellular spin resonance” (CSR) which will be used throughout this chapter.
