The Antennal Glomerulus as a Functional Unit of Odor Coding in Drosophila Melanogaster

  • Chapter
Neurobiology of Sensory Systems

Abstract

Functional mapping experiments using 2-deoxyglucose autoradiography have led to the hypothesis that odor quality is represented as a spatial activity map among the neurons of the olfactory lobe. We are attempting to identify the neural basis of this sensory map in the antennal lobe of Drosophila. Our developmental and functional analysis suggests that the odor map is generated by the projection of broadly specific receptor neurons to the glomeruli. The activity generated among the glomeruli by these neurons is further tuned by the activities of the neurons local to the lobe.
