In Oculo Differentiation of Embryonic Neocortex into Retina in Adult Rat

  • Chapter
Neurobiology of Sensory Systems

Abstract

Embryonic neocortex of 13 day gestation period, when transplanted into the anterior eye chamber of the adult rat differentiated into retina as well as the phenotypical neocortex. The layers of the retina clearly identifiable on the 30th posttransplantation day had close resemblance to those of the adult retina. The few differences observed were (1) absence of an optic fibre layer, (2) low population of cells in the ganglion cell layer, and (3) a narrow outer plexiform layer. Subsequently the ganglion cell layer disappeared followed by the inner nuclear layer. The outer nuclear layer and the photoreceptors continued to be present and were seen in small bits mixed with differentiated neocortical tissue till the end of experimental period, which is 6 months. These findings indicated that early embryonic cortex is capable of differentiating into retina in the anterior chamber of the eye in adult rat, which may have some trophic factor. The continued survival of the retina seems to depend on the connections of the major cell types with the appropriate target sites.
