Abstract
Among the major sets of problems in developmental neurobiology are the definition of the mechanisms by which developing neurons become different from their non-neuronal brethren and from each other and the elucidation of the molecular bases by which the large numbers of cells in the nervous system find and identify one another, form the correct ensemble of connections and maintain appropriate connectivity for the life of the organism. Our laboratory has chosen to use the developing visual system in Drosophila as a model; at the current time, we have obtained a fairly extensive description of the overt aspects of development in the visual system of Drosophila, and we have even been able to specify the rules by which various subsets of this system interact with one another during ontogeny. Yet, we have little understanding of the subcellular and molecular phenomena which control these events.
