Consumer-Centered Transition and Supported Employment

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Applied Clinical Psychology ((NSSB))

Abstract

Upon leaving school, the majority of young adults with learning and behavior problems experience unemployment, social isolation, and economic dependence. Recent follow-up studies of special education graduates suggest that little more than one third are employed full-time, live independently, and are self-supporting. The consistency of this pattern across several statewide studies leaves little doubt about the magnitude of the problem (Fardig, Algozzine, Schwartz, Hensel, & Westling, 1985; Hasazi, Gordon, & Roe, 1985; Mithaug, Horiuchi, & Fanning, 1985; Mithaug, Horiuchi, & McNulty, 1987).
