Abstract

Reactions of sulfur containing molecules on the Ni(110) surface have been studied under ultrahigh vacuum conditions using such surface analysis tools as high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature programmed reactions (TPR) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Mechanistic information on the desulfurization reaction of methanethiol was obtained. The reaction products were gaseous methane and hydrogen, and surface sulfur and carbon. Methylthiolate fragments were identified as intermediates by vibrational spectroscopy (HREELS) and XPS.
