Abstract
Long ago and far away [from Newfoundland], this story begins. The designation Loligo pealei first appears in a paper read at a meeting of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia on the evening of March 20th, 1821, by the then curator Charles Alexandre Lesueur (1778–1846). Born in LeHavre, France, he early became noted for his talents at sketching, drawing and painting natural history specimens. He had a most successful four years (1800–1804) with François Péron on the GEOGRAPHIE Expedition to Australia and Tasmania, which saw the collection of some 100,000 zoological specimens, from which 2,500 new species were described and ultimately published. Only the first volume of results from these collections was published before Péron’s death. Péron bequeathed all his unfinished manuscripts “to the most intimate friend, to the faithful companion of (my) work and research in natural history, to the good and faithful M. Lesueur.”
The object of the Code is to promote stability and universality in the scientific names of animals, and to ensure that each name is unique and distinct.
