Structure and Function of the Squid Eye

  • Chapter

Abstract

This account is not intended as a comprehensive review of work on the remarkable eye of the squid. There is an excellent review on the physiology of cephalopod vision by Messenger (1981), and a brief account of research methods by Daw (1974). The purpose of this chapter is to briefly introduce the eye and its capabilities and then focus on areas where work on squid has contributed or will potentially contribute to biochemistry, cell and molecular biology. I hope to justify this particular choice of topics by demonstrating that the squid eye, while difficult for experimental biology, provides a valuable and unique preparation for studies in the cellular and molecular areas.
