Abstract
Operation of chemical and related process plants presents a range of important problems such as quality control, safety, availability, and efficiency. The computer, while well established in regulatory control functions, has had little impact on the broader range of process operations problems which are often difficult to formulate using conventional numerical/algorithmic approaches to computer programming. Knowledge-based systems offer an alternative to algorithmic programming and have been regarded as a promising approach to application of the computer in this domain.
