Abstract

“When is Dustin Hoffman going to look at my dead-end streets album?” Joseph, our 30-year-old autistic son, called to me as he sat awkwardly on the foot of a twin bed. Lights, huge cameras, large cables on the floor, and exotic-looking equipment were all over the place. Dozens of people were milling about, some hooked up to headphones, others with heavy belts of dangling instruments. ... It was Memorial Day weekend, 1988, in Cincinnati and we were on the set of Rain Man, a film in which Dustin Hoffman plays the role of Raymond, a high-functioning autistic man who is much like Joseph.
