Abstract
This chapter documents an intellectual journey: the process by which I have conceptualized the spatial organization of a contemporary Greek herding system and its relationship to an archaeological landscape. Archaeologists often discuss how spatial patterning and settlement systems can be inferred from archaeological site locations. They also bring to this discussion the assumption that given production systems such as foraging, agriculture, and pastoralism follow a given set of rules dictating where sites will be located and how settlement patterns inform the archaeologist about the mobility, resource use, and environmental settings exploited by past peoples. In this chapter, I start with a different assumption: that the spatial organization of pastoral systems existing on the contemporary landscape provides a basis for investigating how pastoralism may be rendered visible in the archaeological record. My intention is to demonstrate in the ethnographic present how herdsmen organize their use of landscapes through the construction of pastoral facilities and the use of pasture lands and other vital resources. Archaeological questions about how pastoral activities are organized on a landscape, or what constitutes a pastoral site or place can then be answered.
