Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Psychiatry ((CIPS))

Abstract

It is only since 1980 that behaviorists have begun to venture publicly into the treatment of personality disorders (Beck & Hersen, 1990; Padesky, 1986; Pretzer, 1983, 1990; Turner, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1989; Young, 1983, 1988). This phenomenon may be attributed both to changes in diagnostic practices and to developments in personality research (Linehan & Wasson, 1990). The third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III; American Psychiatric Association, 1980) operationalized criteria for psychiatric diagnoses, thus shifting closer to the behavioral paradigm in which an empirical validation of results is essential. Out of the DSM-III, for example, have come several semistructured interviews for the personality disorders that have obtained respectable levels of reliability (Loranger, Oldham, Russakoff, & Susman, 1984; Pfohl, Stangl, & Zimmerman, 1983; Spitzer & Williams, 1985; Widiger, 1985).
