Abstract
The two primary categories of affective disorders (also called mood disorders) are major depression and bipolar disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (third edition, revised) of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-III-R; APA, 1987) is typically used in inpatient psychiatric settings to define and diagnosis these affective disorders. A major depressive episode requires the occurrence of at least five of nine symptoms listed in the manual: (1) depressed mood; (2) diminished interest or pleasure; (3) significant weight change (gain or loss); (4) difficulty sleeping or excessive sleeping; (5) psychomotor agitation or retardation; (6) fatigue or loss of energy; (7) feelings of worthlessness or guilt; (8) difficulty thinking or concentrating; and (9) suicidal ideation or behavior. A further requirement is that either Symptom 1 (depressed mood) or Symptom 2 (diminished interest or pleasure) must be present. Symptoms must be present most of the day, nearly every day for two weeks. These symptoms must also represent a change in functioning from prior behavior.
