The Lower Cambrian Fossil Record of China

  • Chapter
Origin and Early Evolution of the Metazoa

Part of the book series: Topics in Geobiology ((TGBI,volume 10))

Abstract

The upper Proterozoic and Lower Cambrian strata of China preserve a series of unique fossil faunas that provide unique opportunities for studying and understanding the evolution of early Metazoa. These faunas include a late Proterozoic metazoan fauna, diverse pretrilobite shelly assemblages, and an Early Cambrian soft-bodied fauna. The purpose of this chapter is to review briefly these faunas, which are not well known outside China.
