Abstract
Recent recognition of the high prevalence rates of dual diagnosis has heightened our awareness of the particular limitations of our separate mental health and addiction treatment systems. The coexistence of substance use and psychiatric disorders presents a special treatment challenge to clinical staff regardless of their level of experience or academic discipline, as most have learned to conceptualize these disorders as separate phenomena.
