Abstract

Mushroom poisoning is a subcategory of poisoning in general, and food poisoning in particular. The poisoned patient is initially evaluated and treated by a physician as an emergency case. Integral to choosing an appropriate treatment is an assessment by the physician of the type and potential severity of the poisoning. There is no simple toxin-antidote therapy for mushroom poisoning, rather, the toxicology is complex and a crucial bit of needed information is the correct identification of the mushroom. A mycologist can make this identification and can contribute other useful information as well.
