Common Methodological Flaws in Risk Assessment

Abstract

Risk assessments recently completed under CERCLA were reviewed for quality and consistency. Methodological flaws were noted in all the documents. The most common problems have been grouped into four basic categories: inadequate data collection, bias towards common chemicals, arbitrary intake calculations, and poor risk characterization. These sources of bias are discussed, and suggestions are made as to how each can be addressed.
