Fundamentals of the Dispersion Process and Characterization of Coating Marterials Using Different Types of Dispersion Equipment

Abstract

This paper describes several important aspects of the dispersion process. The main steps involved in the dispersion process are as follows: wetting of the solid particles; breakdown of the solid particles; and stabilization of the dispersion. Among these, a special emphasis is given to the breakdown of the solid particles. In order to obtain optimal dispersion, the effect of various influencing parameters on the dispersion process has to be optimized using an appropriate method and equipments. In general, the dispersion equipment can be categorized into two groups: (1) dispersion equipment without grinding material; and (2) dispersion equipment with grinding material. The experimental data on different dispersion systems using both laboratory high speed dissolver and laboratory horizontal bead mill are presented.
