Abstract
The history of epilepsy is both fascinating and complex. Progress over the millennia in discovering the nature and manifestations of epilepsy, however, has been slow. What follows is a brief overview of the history of epilepsy. The material contained in this summary is based on the works of several authors who have produced scholarly works on the history of epilepsy, and much of the material is based on the work of Oswei Temkin (1971). His book, The Falling Sickness, remains the most detailed and scholarly work on the history of epilepsy to date.
