Coping with AIDS and Substance Abuse

  • Chapter
Living and Dying with AIDS

Abstract

The rapid spread of AIDS presents enormous challenges for health care providers. There can be many difficulties for patients whose substance abuse places them at risk for contracting the disease, makes them particularly vulnerable to its rapid progression, and leaves them with poorer ability to cope with the complexities of its psychosocial and medical sequelae. There are numerous connections between HIV disease and substance abuse. These will be reviewed, and suggestions will be made for interventions addressing complex counseling issues that result from the simultaneous problems of HIV disease and alcohol or drug abuse.
