Laser-Light Scattering Study of Nonionic Micelles in Aqueous Solution

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

n-Dodecyl hexaoxyethylene and n-Octyl tetraoxyethylene glycol monoether (C12E8 and C8E4) aqueous solutions are investigated by static and dynamic light scattering over a wide temperature range around the minimum in the cloud curve (critical point). The osmotic isothermal compressibility (apparent molecular weight of the micelle) does not increase exponentially with temperature T. but shows a divergence as T approaches the critical temperature Tc. The divergence of the osmotic compressibility and of the correlation range of concentration fluctuations follows a simple power-law behavior as a function of Tc-T, with values of the critical exponents which depend on the nature of the amphiphile. It is also found, with the system C8E4-H2O, that the low-concentration phase in the two-phase region above Tc is still micellar.
