Tracer Self-Diffusion Studies of Surfactant Association

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

Self-diffusion studies were performed to obtain an insight into the association phenomena in aqueous solutions of sodium p-octylbenzene sulfonate (SOBS). The open-ended capillary tube method, using radioactive labelling of all the kinetic entities of the solution, has been employed so the self-diffusion coefficients of amphiphile ions, sodium counterions, solubilized decanol molecules confined to micellar aggregates and water molecules were studied as a function of surfactant concentration. SOBS micelles can be considered to remain spherical throughout the concentration range studied with a hydrodynamic radius corresponding to the length of the extended surfactant ion and a hydration corresponding to about one layer of water molecules. This result is in accordance with the low “hydration numbers” obtained from water molecule self-diffusion coefficients; there is no marked water penetration deep into the SOBS micelles.
