Abstract

Molecular organization within the hydrocarbon cores of micelles, bilayers, and other amphiphilic aggregates depends on i) intramolecular structure: the continuity and flexibility of the chains, and ii) the balance of intermolecular forces. Attractive exchange interactions are responsible for the differential solubilities of polar heads and hydrocarbon tails in water, But dispersion forces among aliphatic hydrocarbons are isotropic; steric repulsive forces are required to induce the anisotropy responsible for internal structure,
