A New Optically Isotropic Phase in the Dilute Region of the Sodium Octanoate — Decanol — Water System

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

A phase diagram is presented for the dilute region of the sodium octanoate-n-decanol-water system at 30°C based on studies using polarized light screening and optical microscopy. It includes surfactant concentrations up to 10 wt%. An optically isotropic phase is found which has not been previously reported for this system. It contains some 3 to 4 wt% surfactant and some 2 to 5 wt% alcohol and for a given water content, has an alcohol-to-surfactant ratio greater than that of the lamellar liquid crystalline phase. Two-phase and three-phase regions involving this new phase are seen at nearby compositions. Also of interest is that the lamellar phase extends well into the dilute region studied and occurs at water contents exceeding 90 wt%.
