Abstract
Solvent extraction of metal ions from leach liquors by liquid cation exchangers such as carboxylic acids is in many situations considered prohibitive for commercial operation because of the need for adding alkali in an amount at least equivalent to the metal extracted. Besides the primary economic burden from the cost of the alkali, the addition of extra chemicals to a process system will at a later stage in the process have to be removed or reclaimed. Besides, the added chemicals will often end up as an environmental deposit problem.
