Summary
The properties of three bisquaternary ammonium (bolaform) ion-pair reagents for ion-pair thin-layer chromatography have been investigated using a total of 8 organic acids as model compounds. The reagents used were 1,3-bis(trimethylammonium), l,3-bis(triethylammonium) and 1,3-bis-(tripropylammonium)propane (all as dibromide salts). Reversed-phase chromatography was performed on silica gel, C18 bonded silica gel and paraffin coated silica gel with methanol-water based solvents. For normal-phase chromatography on silica gel dichloromethane-methanol mixtures were used. All three bolaform compounds behaved as ion-pair reagents, however, the properties of the bistripropyl compound were significantly different from those of the bistrimethyl and bistriethyl reagents. A possible reason for the observed differences, involving the interaction of the compounds with free silanol groups, is discussed.
