Amyloid, Immunopathology and Aging

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Basic Life Sciences ((BLSC,volume 35))

Abstract

Recent advances in our understanding of the biochemistry and pathogenesis of the amyloid diseases have begun to provide information regarding the age-related amyloidoses in humans. Monospecific antisera to fibril subunit proteins are being used for the immunohistological typing of different forms of amyloid. This review will summarize current information relating amyloid to aging, particularly in regard to the pathoanatomic triad of islet cell hyalinization of the pancreas (type II diabetes mellitus), senile cardiac amyloidosis, and plaques/congophilic angiopathy in brain (senile dementia/Alzheimers disease).
