Abstract

The telecommunications system organization used in the text is shown in Figure 3.1. It is divided into three separate functional areas. These are (i) transmission (traffic-carrying units), which includes the terminals, the line transmission equipment, the line interface, the switching matrix, the trunk interface, the trunk transmission equipment; (ii) the switching system control interfaces; and (iii) the switching system controls.
