Abstract

Let me begin by trying to give a somewhat broad perspective on this area of work. It seems also appropriate to then look back at how things were done in the past. Perhaps this bit of history and motivation can set the stage for an appreciation of what the past few years have done for the gamma-ray and X-ray regions. Amid all these talks about elegant exercises in frequency synthesis and macroscopic manifestations of quantum systems, the work here described appears somewhat primitive since it involves only the most rudimentary measurement of displacements and angles. These simple measurements are, however, matters of exquisite difficulty owing to the scale at which they are encountered.
