Abstract
The Josephson junctions exhibit a rich variety of phenomena which have enhanced our fundamental understanding of quantum Physics and also led to the development of several versatile devices. The metrological applications of the AC Josephson effect are reviewed in this volume by Dr. Kose (Chapter III.1) and Dr. Petley (Chapter III.6); other papers in this volume also consider some aspects of Josephson effects. In this chapter we first briefly review the history and theories of superconductivity. Following this is a necessarily non-exhaustive discussion of the Physics of the Josephson effects.
