Abstract
In 1982 CERN started the development of high current switches for a pulse generator feeding current pulses of several hundred kiloamperes into a plasma lens to be used for secondary particle collection at accelerator targets. Commercial switches featuring 20 kV hold-off capability, currents of more than 100 kA at a circuit impedance level of 20 to 100 mΩ and repetition rates of 0.2 to 0.5 Hz could not be found on the market. High power switches of the pseudospark type seemed particularly attractive for this application.
