Abstract

Interest in the structures and properties of low-dimensional metal complexes was stimulated by the work of Krogmann in the late 1960s.1 However the compounds which aroused so much interest then have a much longer history. Indeed many of the compounds that were studied intently in the 1970s were first prepared in the middle of the 19th century although the true nature of the materials was to remain a mystery for over a hundred years.
