Abstract

ACTH secretion by the anterior pituitary gland is controlled by several regulatory factors of hypothalamic, neurohypophysial and peripheral origins. The ACTH-regulatory factors include corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), arginine-vasopressin (AVP), oxytocin, epinephrine and angiotensin II1. There is now evidence that CRF is the major physiologic regulator of ACTH secretion2. Therefore, the measurement of CRF release into hypophysial portal blood (HPB) may provide important informations on the mechanisms of regulation of ACTH secretion. However, HPB is collected under special experimental conditions that may alter the physiologic release of CRF. In this report, we will first discuss technical problems in CRF measurements in HPB and secondly review data available on the secretion of CRF into HPB including data from our laboratory.
