Myogenesis: A Problem of Cell Distribution and Cell Interactions

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 118))

Abstract

For a long time the mesodermal cells of early avian embryos were thought to be undetermined and pluripotent (Zwilling, 1968; Caplan and Koutroupas, 1973). Thus, their later differentiation should be a function of positional information as well as tissue-tissue interactions (Blech-Schmidt, 1960; Wolpert, 1969; Summerbell et al., 1973; Nathanson et al., 1978). This point of view has also been applied to the muscle-forming potential of early mesodermal cells (Caplan and Koutroupas, 1973; McLachlan and Hornbruch, 1979; Nathanson, 1983).
