Abstract
Applications of psychological assessment and intervention strategies to the problems of developmentally and physically disabled persons have proliferated in recent years (cf. Golden, 1984; Goldenson, Dunham, & Dunham, 1978; Hersen, Van Hasselt, & Matson, 1983). The heightened activity in this area is attributable, in part, to the burgeoning number of disabled individuals. Indeed, recent surveys reveal that as many as 36 million people, or 15% of the population of the United States, have some form of disability (Bowe, 1980). Of those 65 years or older, nearly 50% report a physical impairment (DeJong & Lifchez, 1983). Further, it has been estimated that 10% of children under age 21 are handicapped (Gliedman & Roth, 1980). Moreover, as a result of improved prenatal care, better nutrition, decreased infant mortality rates due to advances in surgical and medical care, and more effective treatments for infant diseases, the number of disabled persons is expected to rise sharply over the next decade (Anderson, 1969; Dibedenetto, 1976; Mulliken & Buckley, 1983).
