Abstract

The identification in the United Kingdom of a novel form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), designated new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD), led to the proposal that these cases might be causally linked to the occurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Since the publication of an article describing the cases and the predominantly epidemiological evidence implying a causal link (1), there has been extensive comment and debate on the strength of this data and it is perhaps timely to review the hypothesis in the light of subsequent scientific developments.
