Abstract

This chapter introduces some of the historical developments that influenced the evolution of psychology as a natural science. Those developments include (a) the philosophy of Descartes; (b) the evolution of the scientific method by such notable scientists as Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Darwin; and (c) the beginnings of modern scientific psychology with contributions by Pavlov, Thorndike, Watson, and Skinner.
