Models for Investigation of Peptide and Protein Transport across Cultured Mammalian Respiratory Epithelial Barriers

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Pharmaceutical Biotechnology ((PBIO,volume 8))

Abstract

In this chapter, we describe in vitro methods that can be used for the investigation of peptide and protein transport across respiratory epithelial barriers. We begin with the approaches for culture of alveolar epithelial and tracheo(bronchial) epithelial cells, followed by experimental methods to investigate transport and metabolism utilizing the cultured cells. Where appropriate, advantages and disadvantages of the approaches utilized are discussed.
