Streptococcal Research at Pasteur Institute from Louis Pasteur’s Time to Date

Streptococci and the Host

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 418))

Abstract

The purpose of this review is to briefly highlight the main landmarks of a 117-year period of research on streptococci from 1879 to date at Pasteur Institute. The first historical work in this respect was initiated by Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) himself eight years before the foundation of the Institute in 1887 and five years after the description by Billroth1 in 1874 of the “Kettenkokken” (chain - forming cocci) designated as “streptococcus” by this author. The long history of streptococcal research in Pasteur Institute from the pioneering work of Louis Pasteur to date could by conveniently divided into three successive periods.

You provide me the deepest joy for a man who invincibly believes that science and peace will triumph over ignorance and war, that the peoples will agree not to destroy but to build, and that the future will belong to those who do the most for suffering humanity. Pasteur’s address on his Jubilee (27 th December 1892)
