Abstract
Delineation between invasive and non invasive strains of group A streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes) is complex and important advances have been made in epidemiology and knowledge of the cofactors involved in pathogenicity, including the antigenically variant M protein.2,5 In previous series of pharyngitis and septicemic strains, we reported an association between biotypes and serotypes, which suggested that M proteins and physiological characters can cooperate for pathogenicity.1,3 This hypothesis led us to investigate a larger population of strains, responsible for invasive or non invasive infections, to determine whether invasiveness was associated with specific biotypes and serotypes.
