Effects of Caffeine on Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Release from Islet Transplants

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 426))

Abstract

Islet transplantation has long been regarded as a promising approach for ameliorating type-1 diabetes. Despite progress in developing procedures for isolating donor islets(1–3), immunosuppressive agents(4–6), and techniques for immuno-isolation(7–9), the overall success has not yet been overwhelming. The possibility that dislocation and denervation alters the properties of donor islets has received little attention. The extent to which islets behave normally at an ectopic site remains a basic question.
