Immunological Analysis of G-Protein Expression in the Endocrine Pancreas

Inhibition of insulin secretion by agonists acting at cell surface receptors (e.g. α2-agonists, somatostatin, galanin) is mediated by one or more guanine-nucleotide binding (G) proteins that serve as substrates for pertussis toxin1. Recent work has established that a family of such proteins exist and that at least 3 subtypes (Gi2 and two forms of Go) are present in rat islet cells2,3.
