Abstract

Dipodascopsis uninucleata, a lipomycetaceous mycelial yeast with a well-defined life cycle, synthesises small amounts of arachidonic acid (ARA) and also produces the novel pharmacologically active metabolite, 3-hydroxyarachidonic acid (3-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid, 3-HETE) from exogenous ARA during its sexual phase (van Dyk et al, 1991; Kock et al, 1997). The production of 3-HETE from exogenous ARA and both ascosporogenesis and ascospore production in D. uninucleata were all inhibited by 1 mM aspirin (van Dyk et al, 1991; Botha et al, 1992; Coetzee et al, 1992).
